Why unions want pay levels merged under the 8th Pay Commission
The 8th Pay Commission is still deliberating before issuing recommendations on pay, allowances and salary structure. Around one crore people stand to benefit — roughly 50 lakh serving central government employees and 65 lakh pensioners, including defence personnel — across 18 employee levels. Staff body NC-JCM wants several of those levels merged to compress the pay structure.
